We have a thriving Junior Section at primary age and want to inspire a love of hockey amongst boys and girls of all ages. The focus is on encouraging participation whilst developing skills and helping peer groups to develop and play together.  We can provide sticks, but all players are required to bring and wear gum shields and shinpads. Training is held on Sundays for all ages, with additional U10 and U12 training also on Fridays.

Sunday training runs in five ‘blocks’ from 7 September 2025 until 17 May 2026. All training is held at the main club pitch, led by NZ internationalist and Bowdon W1s player, Alex Lukin, and supported by professional coaches, performance players and volunteers. These skills-based sessions are planned around our Bowdon Development Curriculum, which has been designed in line with the England Hockey pathway. There are three sessions adapting for different ages:

9 – 10am:                Reception, Years 1, 2 & 3 (FUNdamentals)
10 – 11.15am:         Years 4 & 5 (U10s) (FUNdamentals)
11.15 – 12.30pm:   Years 6 – 8  (Foundations)

Reception to Year 3: Hockey FUNdamentals

Training for young players in Reception to Year 3 takes place on Sundays 9 – 10am from September until the May Whit Half Term. These are professional coach-led training sessions with specific equipment, games and drills to help younger players build up basic hockey skills in a fun and enjoyable way. We welcome parents assisting coaches at these sessions. Flexible blocks of sessions allow players to try without full season commitment.

Years 4 – 6: Hockey FUNdamentals and Foundations

We hold two sessions a week for this age group (split into U10s for years 4 and 5 and U12s for years 6 and 7), with a focus on developing enjoyment, core skills for all and 7 a side game awareness and tactics.

The Sunday sessions focus on core skills and have split timings. Year 4s and 5s train together as U10s from 10 – 11.15am, while year 6s train alongside year 7 and 8s from 11.15am – 12.30pm. Players are grouped broadly for ability, enabling all players to have appropriate stretch, with newer players encouraged to develop in their own time.

On Fridays, U10s and U12s train as separate age groups, applying core skills into gameplay and developing game, position and rule awareness. These run from September until Easter, with breaks at teh first weekend of each of the Trafford school holidays. Both these sessions are led by Alex Lukin with a similar coaching team to Sundays.

At Friday sessions groups will be split by gender where possible to provide appropriate stretch and build peer group connections.

U10 boys and girls: 4.30 – 5.30pm
U12 boys and girls: 5.30 – 6.30pm

Don’t forget that the Club bar is open and food will be available for all the family each week!

Our fees for the 25/26 season are published here (see section ‘Part 2 – Membership of the Bowdon Hockey section’).
